Sheriff reports of 41 accidents

Sheriff Donald O’Cain reported there were a total of 41 dispatches of vehicles that were called in for vehicles that slid from the roadway. 

Tuesday evening a fuel truck turned over on Highway 49 near D’Lo the sheriff reported it was empty.  There was also a log truck that turned over near Pinola. 


Ice remains on roads in parts of state; MDOT advises no travel in affected areas

JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues its response to the winter weather event statewide and continues to advise the public to stay off roads with reported icy conditions and to limit travel to emergencies only.



Jean Clyde Floyd

Jean Clyde Ford gained her heavenly wings on Thursday, January 18, 2018.  She was born on December 31, 1924, to James Edward Wilson and Belle (Harper) Wilson.


Danny Cox

Danny Cox passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at UMMC in Jackson.  He was born on October 8, 1948, to Shelley Wade Cox and Frances Victoria (Phillips) Cox in Columbus, GA. 

He was retired from MS State Guard, was a WWII Vietnam Veteran, 15 year Army Guard and 22 years MS Air Guard.



Morris M. Pearson

Morris M. Pearson, 83, of D Lo, Mississippi, died Sunday at Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall, Mississippi. He was born Thursday, August 23, 1934.

He was preceded in death by Parents, Elmer Pearson and Zona Pearson; Sisters, Betty, Ruth Wells and Geneva Woods.

Mendenhall Junior High well represented in MS Prospects football game

Four seventh grade students from Mendenhall Junior High will be representing Simpson County in the Second Annual Mississippi Prospects Football game on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at the University of Southern MS. Dollar General robbed again

On January 6, two armed men entered the Dollar General Store located on Highway 28 West just outside of Magee and robbed it.  It was the second robbery of the store.

The gunmen held the clerks at gunpoint and demanded money from the register. After the pair took an undisclosed amount of money they left on foot.

Body found and identified

At approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 20, the Magee Police Department responded to a call describing a dead body near the Highway 28 West and Highway 49 intersection.

Assistant Chief Joey Womack explained that a body was lying in the road not far from the CEFCO and Texaco service stations.

Sarah Jean Morton

Graveside services for Sarah Jean Morton were Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 11 a.m. from Linwood Cemetery in Neshoba County. McClain-Hays Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. 

Ms. Morton, 81, of D’Lo, MS, died Friday, January 5, 2018. 


David Edward Carruth

David Edward Carruth passed away December 27, 2017, after living a long, happy life in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida beginning in 1976. He graduated from the University of South Florida and spent his career working in the pharmaceutical manufacturing and services industry.


John Albert Taylor

Services for Mr. John Albert Taylor were held Saturday, October 14, 2017 at noon at New Ebenezer M.B. Church. Mr. Taylor was laid to rest in Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. 
Services and arrangements were entrusted to Westhaven Memorial Funreal Home, Magee.


Let It Snow!

Simpson countians were in for a real shock when they awakened last Friday morning to find a fresh snow fall.  There were reports of up to 6 inches of snow which continued to fall during the morning.  This caused power outages around the county, but power was restored as quickly as possible according to power companies.  A lot of folks had lost


Birtie M. Kennedy

Birtie M. Kennedy, 89,  gained her angel wings on December 29, 2017, at Magee General Hospital. She was born on May 23, 1928, to parents Ross and Jewel (Dickerson) Butler in Smith County, MS.


Edward C. Loper

Edward C Loper, 64, of Mize passed away Sunday, October 15, 2017 at his home.

Memorial Service for Edward C Loper will be held at a later date.

He is preceded in death by father, John Edward Loper; brother, Jimmy Loper; son, Keith Boykin; daughter, Patricia Boykin.
