N. Main project gets ok’ed

The Mendenhall Mayor and Board of Aldermen called a special meeting on April 13 at 7 a.m. to discuss the three properties currently being built by Jaron Priest on North Main Street. The issues with the properties began in December 2017. Priest is building one home to live in and two additional homes that he plans sell.





Appointment has domino effect

The pre-brokered plans to appoint an election commissioner for Simpson County have apparently been foiled based on objections of conflict of interest.
Following the recent appointment of former State Representative Andy Gipson to Agriculture Commissioner, the dominoes started falling, creating vacancies in Simpson County politics.



Banis, Fewell to unite June 2

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Banis of Magee joyfully announce the engagement of their daughter, Savannah Faith Banis, to Mason Warren Fewell. Mason is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Shane Fewell of Mendenhall. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Fewell of Mendenhall and Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Luckey of Magee.

Bobbie Jean Little Taylor

Bobbie Jean Little Taylor, 87, of Mendenhall, Mississippi, passed away Sunday in Summit, Mississippi. She was born Sunday, November 2, 1930.

Mrs. Bobbie was retired from the Mississippi State Department of Vocational Education.




Joseph Alexander Montgomery

Mr. Montgomery, 74, passed from this life on Monday, April 16, 2018. He was born March 23, 1944 in Kosciusko, Ms.  Mr. Montgomery is survived by his wife Joyce Montgomery; 8 children; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters Maggie Dendy Withers and Mary Outlaw. Mr.

Cheryl Ann Buckley Bullock

Cheryl Ann Buckley Bullock, 61, passed away April 15, 2018 at Copiah County Medical Center.  Memorial services will be 2pm Sunday at Bethlehem Baptist Church.  Stringer Family Funeral Home in Crystal Springs is handling arrangements.

Mary Atkisson

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Atkisson will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the Old Hebron Baptist Church. Mrs. Atkisson, 93, passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018, at her residence. Dr. John Anderson officiated and interment was in the New Hebron Cemetery.

Arrest Reports 4-19-2018

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 35 arrests from April 9 to April 16.

Lee Floyd of 102 North Congress Street Mendenhall was arrested on April 9 and charged with leaving the scene and possession of a controlled substance


Gussie C. Walker

Gussie C. Walker passed away on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at MS Care Center in Raleigh.  She was born on September 2, 1922, to her parents, the late Dewey Cooper and Alice Shoemaker Cooper.

She was a member of Kennedy Springs Baptist Church.

Sheriff reports of 41 accidents

Sheriff Donald O’Cain reported there were a total of 41 dispatches of vehicles that were called in for vehicles that slid from the roadway. 

Tuesday evening a fuel truck turned over on Highway 49 near D’Lo the sheriff reported it was empty.  There was also a log truck that turned over near Pinola. 


Ice remains on roads in parts of state; MDOT advises no travel in affected areas

UPDATE – Wednesday, January 17, 12:30 p.m.

JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues its response to the winter weather event statewide and continues to advise the public to stay off roads with reported icy conditions and to limit travel to emergencies only.



Body found and identified

At approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 20, the Magee Police Department responded to a call describing a dead body near the Highway 28 West and Highway 49 intersection.

Assistant Chief Joey Womack explained that a body was lying in the road not far from the CEFCO and Texaco service stations.
