MSU Lady Bulldogs were almost perfect
Mississippi St. defeat lifts pressure for perfection Tuesday 3/6/2018 The Mississippi State women’s basketball team picked a pretty big stage — the SEC championship game against arch-rival South Carolina — to lay an egg. But that’s what happened Sunday. The loss denied the Bulldogs their first-ever SEC Tournament championship and also ended their 32-game winning streak.
The Bulldogs let the game slip away in the second quarter, and were unable to mount a sustained comeback in the second half. Nothing went right. State shot poorly from all over the court and looked more like a 12th seed than the undefeated, No. 2 team in the country.
When you’re unbeaten, as State was before Sunday, losing is painful. But there is a bright side to the defeat: The pressure of a perfect season has been lifted, and they can focus on winning six games in the NCAA Tournament.
It would be a thrill for a rematch with South Carolina — or with UConn, which State upset last year in the national semifinals.
