Five Month Investigation Ends in Arrests

By MARLAN JONES,

On January 6, 2018 two armed men entered the Dollar General Store located on Highway 28 West just outside of Magee. The gunmen held the clerks at gunpoint and demanded money from the register. After the men took an undisclosed amount of money the pair left on foot, fleeing towards a wooded area.

Simpson County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with Magee Police Department were on the scene less than two minutes later. Investigators arrived on the scene, conducted a thorough search of the area and allegedly located evidence that was used in the crime. According to Sheriff Donald O’Cain the department recovered gloves and masks which were sent to the forensic lab for DNA analysis.

The investigation continued through the months with the processing of evidence, and interviewing of any possible witnesses.  Search warrants were conducted to further the investigation, and as a result suspects were identified. Two suspects were identified as Lance McCullough and Dearrius Gray. The two were arrested in June and charged with armed robbery. Their initial appearance was before Judge Ted Blakeney who set bond at $75,000. O’Cain said the investigation is ongoing and more arrest may be forth coming.
