Fire claims lives of two

By MARLAN JONES,

A structure fire claimed two lives early Monday morning.

Simpson County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Chris Wallace said that an emergency call was made at 5:32 a.m. reporting a structure fire. Deputies, along with the Magee Fire Department, were dispatched to Rodney Sullivan Road in the Saratoga community.

Wallace explained that when he arrived he found a camper that had completely burned and was smoldering.

He said there was very little to work with in terms of investigating a fire scene. He praised the Magee firefighters who extinguished the blaze and did a good job preserving what they could. After the fire was was extinguished Wallace said they were able to find the remains of Raymond Hamilton. He described Hamilton as an elderly man who was wheelchair bound.

Wallace said that they also discovered a second body that was identified as Martha Hamilton. The bodies were discovered in what would have been the bedroom area of the camper.

Fire marshal Ben Brown and MBI investigator Trent Weeks were called to assist with the investigation. Wallace said investigators did not find anything that signified foul play.

The fire marshal has yet to determine what caused the blaze, but Wallace believes it was electrical.

Wallace said, “My condolences to the family. The fire department did a really good job to preserve the scene and extinguish the blaze.  They treated the scene and everything with respect.”
