Tiger Basketball

The Mendenhall Tigers took on the Northeast Jones Tigers last Friday. Chanston Berry, Bryson Mills, Darius Keys, David Berry, and Jarod McLaurin started the game for the Tigers. The Tigers started the game slower than what fans were accustomed to. The first quarter was closely contested. Both teams seemed to commit an equal amount of turnovers in the first quarter which ended with a one point Mendenhall lead 18-17.

Mendenhall held on to a one point lead throughout the rest of the first half finishing the second quarter 30-29. The game continued to be close until midway through the fourth quarter. Northeast Jones attempted to make several runs and each time they were answered by the Tigers. Bryson Mills began aggressively attacking the basket and got to the free throw line. Darius Keys did a great job creating space in the paint, and out rebounding the opposing center. Keys’ offensive rebounds often led to points for Mendenhall.

Northeast Jones continued to battle until the end, and brought the final score within three on a fourth quarter buzzer beater. The final score was 64-61. The Tigers beat Northeast Jones for their first district win. The Tigers are now 1-2 in district with losses to Quitman and Newton County.

Head Coach Stan Speech expressed that he likes where the team is headed, and he is optimistic about their chances to emerge as the leader in their district.
