Veteran responds to disrepect

Dear Editor,

Charla Magee wrote two letters to the editor saying that not standing during our national anthem is not disrespectful to our nation, our military and our flag.  She justified that belief by saying that our flag code allows that behavior.  Reading the strict letter of the code while ignoring both the spirit and original intent of the code and also ignoring all the people who say why they feel offended by the behavior, I understand her justification.  I do not agree but understand it.

She went on to say that the only reason the NFL players refuse to stand is to protest police brutality against black people.  I believe there are additional reasons but will assume for now that that is the only reason.  Where is the proof that police are more brutal to black people than to other races?  Not very far back in our history, it was true that there really was more brutality against blacks, but where is the proof that that is still true?   We have all heard the disproved stories such as O. J. Simpson was framed and Michel Brown had his hands up.  If someone gives me verified proof that there is widespread police brutality against black people, I will eat at Pappa John’s.
