DA announces felony convictions

District Attorney Matt Sullivan announces the following defendants have been adjudicated guilty and sentenced to significant punishments for felony crimes committed in the Thirteenth District.  Simpson County:  Robert Kilpatrick received 10 years for Possession of Methamphetamine.  Jerry Hutchins received 10 years for Possession of Methamphetam




One year later--Former Magee Elementary campus has fallen into disrepair

The American Flag has been left flying over the deserted campus of the old Magee elementary School, which has been abandoned by the school district.  If this were private property the city would have enforced clean up policies, but this is not being done.  This is a blight of the community.  See “Of a Serious Nature” Page 4.

 




Premature Choice for Peace Prize

Phil Bryant and a handful of other U.S. governors seem a little premature — not to mention a little selective in their evidence — for pushing President Donald Trump for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

One would think that in order to qualify, a nominee should actually have achieved some peace, rather than just talked about it.

M.L. Flowers, age 85, departed this life on April 27, 2017 in Fullertown, CA.

Services were held Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Friendship M.B. Church, Collins. Mr. Flower’s final resting place is in the church cemetery.

Services and arrangements were entrusted to Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home of Magee.

 


Bernadine Elizabeth Howell Mashburn

Bernardine Elizabeth Howell Mashburn, 58, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018.  Services were 10am Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS.  Visitation was 5-7pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Burial was in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Pearl, MS.  Reverend Guy Hughes and Rev.

Gerry Prince, 88, of Magee, Mississippi, died Monday at Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall. She was born Monday, January 20, 1930.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Colonial Chapel Funeral Home Magee.


Clayton Earl Henderson

Clayton Earl Henderson, age 45, departed this life on May 4, 2018 at his home in Jackson.

Services were held Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Westhaven Funeral Home, Jackson. Mr. Henderson’s final resting place is at the Military Cemetery in Newton.


Arrest Reports 5-17-2018

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 32 arrests from May 7 to May 14.

The SCSO reported the following additional arrests: warrants (3), possession of paraphernalia (5), simple assault, domestic violence, DUI 1st (8), disorderly conduct (3), hold (6), failure to comply, DUI 1st other, public drunk, court order, and capias.

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Lofton Magee, 103, Magee, ( St. Peter Church Community) were held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 11 a.m. from the St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, Magee.  Interment was in the church cemetery.  Pastor Troy L.

Sheriff reports of 41 accidents

Sheriff Donald O’Cain reported there were a total of 41 dispatches of vehicles that were called in for vehicles that slid from the roadway. 

Tuesday evening a fuel truck turned over on Highway 49 near D’Lo the sheriff reported it was empty.  There was also a log truck that turned over near Pinola. 





Ice remains on roads in parts of state; MDOT advises no travel in affected areas

JACKSON, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues its response to the winter weather event statewide and continues to advise the public to stay off roads with reported icy conditions and to limit travel to emergencies only.

Dollar General robbed again

On January 6, two armed men entered the Dollar General Store located on Highway 28 West just outside of Magee and robbed it.  It was the second robbery of the store.

The gunmen held the clerks at gunpoint and demanded money from the register. After the pair took an undisclosed amount of money they left on foot.
