Roosevelt Funchess

Mr. Roosevelt Funchess, age 74, departed this life February 9, 2018, at St. Dominic Medical Center, Jackson.

A service for Mr. Funchess was held Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2018 at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home, 3500 Robinson Road, Jackson.

Mrs. Bailey’s final resting place will be Autumn Woods Cemetery, Northside Drive, Jackson.



Sammy Vernon

Sammy Vernon, 74, of Magee, Mississippi, died Monday at King's Daughter Hospital in Brookhaven, Mississippi. He was born Wednesday, January 26, 1944.




Arrest Reports 2-22-2018

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office reported 21 arrests from February 12 to February 19.

Mitchell Edwards of 306 James Smith Drive Mendenhall was arrested on February 16 and charged with possession of a controlled substance and beer.

Fire claims lives of two

A structure fire claimed two lives early Monday morning.

Simpson County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Chris Wallace said that an emergency call was made at 5:32 a.m. reporting a structure fire. Deputies, along with the Magee Fire Department, were dispatched to Rodney Sullivan Road in the Saratoga community.




Simmons, Floyd to wed Feb. 3

Ashley Nicole Simmons, daughter of Tony and Nannette Simmons of Mize, a 2004 graduate of Mize Attendance Center, graduated nursing school at Jones County Junior College in 2008.  She received a bachelor’s of science in nursing from William Carey University in 2012, and masters of science in nursing from University of South Alabama in 2015.

Body found and identified

At approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 20, the Magee Police Department responded to a call describing a dead body near the Highway 28 West and Highway 49 intersection.

Assistant Chief Joey Womack explained that a body was lying in the road not far from the CEFCO and Texaco service stations.




Sheriff reports of 41 accidents

Sheriff Donald O’Cain reported there were a total of 41 dispatches of vehicles that were called in for vehicles that slid from the roadway. 

Tuesday evening a fuel truck turned over on Highway 49 near D’Lo the sheriff reported it was empty.  There was also a log truck that turned over near Pinola.
