Former M’hall mayor Al Gary dies in Texas accident

Al Gary of Mendenhall died Monday, January 8, 2018, as the result of a one car accident in Longview, Texas, on January 7.

Gary was chief financial officer for Simpson General Hospital in Mendenhall.  He had served as mayor of Mendenhall from 2001 through 2005 and was a former business manager for the Simpson County School District.  He had also been a member of the Mississippi National Guard and had retired from the US Army Reserve after 23 years of service.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of Peoples Bank, a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Mendenhall and a Gideon. He was named Citizen of the Year by the Mendenhall Area Chamber of Commerce in 2015.

Gary was a Certified Public Accountant and had worked in the State Auditor’s Office.

“He loved working and he loved people,” said his daughter, Jenny Gary Peden.  “He also loved Simpson General Hospital, his church and the community.”

He is survived by his wife, Jeannie Gary of Mendenhall; three daughters, Jessica Wilson (Estus) of Dallas, Texas, Jamie Gary of Birmingham, Ala., and Jenny Gary Peden of Puckett; two grandchildren, Sonny Peden and Rose Peden; a brother, Howard Gary of McComb; and special friends, Randall and Patty Neely and Steven and Deborah Ammann, all of Mendenhall.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Area high schools have chosen their top graduates for special honors at graduation ceremonies across the county this month.  They will be recognized and speak to audiences at those ceremonies.
